Light doesn’t need a medium to travel, and it travels through a vacuum at 300 million meters per second. The speed of sound through air is about 340 meters per second, and it’s faster through water and steel. The speed of light is much faster than the speed of sound, and nothing can propagate faster than the speed of light. One observation from everyday life that supports this is lightning. When lightning occurs in the sky, the sound of the lightning comes after, but before we are able to see it in the sky.
