The type of crust found under the continents is called continental crust. It is characterized by a composition rich in silicates and aluminum (often referred to as sial). The continental crust is thicker and less dense compared to the oceanic crust, generally ranging from 30 to 50 kilometers in thickness but can be as thick as 70 kilometers or more in mountainous regions. It mainly consists of diverse rocks including granitic, sedimentary, and metamorphic types. This crust is buoyant relative to the denser mantle beneath it, allowing it to form the landmasses we know as continents.
