Type 1 diabetes is the type of diabetes that you are born with. It results from an autoimmune reaction and usually appears in adolescents and young adults, although it can develop at any age. In this type of diabetes, the pancreas does not produce insulin, which is the key that allows glucose to enter cells to produce energy. As a result, people with type 1 diabetes need to take insulin injections or use an insulin pump to manage their blood sugar levels. There is currently no cure for type 1 diabetes.
