Nigeria has a federal presidential republic form of government. It is composed of three branches: the executive, legislative, and judicial, with powers vested by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The president serves as both the head of state and head of government and is elected by popular vote for a maximum of two four-year terms. The legislative branch is bicameral, consisting of the Senate and the House of Representatives, collectively known as the National Assembly, which makes laws and checks the executive. The judiciary is independent and headed by the Supreme Court. Nigeria is divided into 36 states and a Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, each with its own government structure under the federal system. This structure is modeled after the United States system and emphasizes separation of powers and representative democracy
