The plastic material found on the streets is mainly post-consumer plastic waste, such as product packaging. This plastic waste is collected and managed to be used in the construction of plastic roads, which are roads made partially or entirely from plastic or plastic composites with other materials. The most common plastics used in packaging that are used in the construction of plastic roads are polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE), polypropylene (PP), and high- and low-density polyethylene (HDPE and LDPE) . The plastic waste is incorporated into an asphalt mix to create a plastic-asphalt mix, which is used to replace bitumen mixed with recycled asphalt. It is important to note that pure plastic roads require the use of compatible plastics because, when melted, plastics of different types may phase-separate and cause structural weaknesses, which can lead to premature failure.
