The type of power plant that was set up in Darjeeling in 1897 was a hydroelectric power station. The Sidrapong Hydroelectric Power Station, located at the foothills of Arya Tea Estate 12 km (7.5 mi) from Darjeeling town, is the oldest hydel power station in India. The Darjeeling Municipality secured a loan of ₹1 lakh (₹100,000) from the government to set up the power station, and a site for the power station was selected at the foot of the Arya Tea Estate at Sidrapong. The power station initially had a capacity of 130 kW, but it grew to a total capacity of 1000 kW with the addition of more sets. The West Bengal State Electricity Board took over the Sidrapong Hydel Power Station when it absorbed the Darjeeling Electric Supply Undertaking on 30 January 1978.
