The first hydroelectric power plant in India was installed in Darjeeling, West Bengal in 1897. The project was inaugurated on November 10, 1897, by C.C. Stevens, the acting Lieutenant Governor of Bengal. The hydroelectric power plant was set up to light up the town of Darjeeling and was located at the foot of the Arya Tea Estate at Sidrapong. The plant had a capacity of 130 kW when it was first installed, and it was the oldest of its type in India. The Sidrapong Hydroelectric Power Station is still operational today, making it the oldest hydel power station in the country.
