Medicare covers most vaccines, and some are covered by Part B while others are covered by Part D. Here is a list of vaccines that Medicare covers:
Vaccines covered by Medicare Part B:
- Influenza (flu) shots, including both the seasonal flu vaccine and the H1NI (swine flu) vaccine
- Pneumococcal (pneumonia) shots
- Hepatitis B shots
- COVID-19 vaccine
- Vaccines after you have been exposed to a dangerous virus or disease, such as a tetanus shot if you step on a rusty nail, or a rabies shot if you are bitten by a dog
Vaccines covered by Medicare Part D:
- All commercially available vaccines needed to prevent illness, except for flu, pneumonia, hepatitis B, and COVID-19 vaccinations, which are covered by Part B
- Vaccines that are "reasonable and necessary" to prevent illness and are not covered by Part B
Medicare Part D covers vaccine administration costs as part of each vaccines negotiated price. If your provider recommends that you get a vaccine, in most cases it will be covered by your Part D plan. To avoid billing issues, it is usually best to make sure that your health care provider or pharmacy administering the vaccine will bill your Part D plan.
