Athena was essentially urban and civilized, and she was regarded as the patron and protectress of various cities across Greece. She was the daughter of Zeus and Metis, a nymph, and was born fully grown and clothed in armor from Zeuss head. Athena was a fierce and ruthless warrior, and she fought alongside the Greek heroes in the Trojan War. She was also the goddess of good counsel, of prudent restraint, and practical insight. Athena was associated with various crafts, especially weaving, and was the patron of metalworkers. Her major symbols include owls, olive trees, snakes, and the Gorgoneion. Athena was worshipped in all parts of Greece, and from the fifth century BC, the role of the goddess of philosophy became a major aspect of Athenas cult.
