Chatur-vedi-mangalam was a Brahmin settlement created by kings and local chiefs with irrigation facilities in ancient India. It was also known as agrahara, brahmadeya, brahmadesha, and was gifted to Brahmins. The name is probably derived from the four Vedas or char Vedas and mangalam refers to village. An inscription found in the Kailasanatha temple mentions that this place was called Ekadhira-chaturvedi-mangalam in the Pallava times of the 9th century.
