Hera is the goddess of marriage, women, and family, and the protector of women during childbirth. She is also the queen of the twelve Olympians and Mount Olympus, sister and wife of Zeus, and daughter of the Titans Cronus and Rhea. Hera is responsible for presiding over weddings, blessing and legalizing marital unions, and protecting women from harm during childbirth. She is the patron goddess of lawful marriage. In addition to her role as a marriage goddess, Hera is also associated with the sky and the stars of heaven. Hera is often depicted as a beautiful woman wearing long, flowing robes and a distinctive cylindrical crown called a polos, or a wreath and a veil. She had a number of sacred animals, most prominently the peacock, along with the cuckoo and the cow.
