The term "Israel" is used in the Bible to refer to different things, including a person, a people, and a place. The man Israel was initially named Jacob, and he was one of two sons of Isaac and Rebecca, and a grandson of Abraham. When he was born second, he was clutching the heel of his older brother. Later, he wrestled with a man and was given the name Israel, which means "one who prevails with God" or "let God prevail". The name Israel is also used collectively in the Bible to denote God’s chosen people, the descendants of Jacob, as well as the geographical region God grants to his chosen people. The term "Land of Israel" is a direct translation of the Hebrew phrase ארץ ישראל (Eretz Yisrael), which occasionally occurs in the Bible, and is first mentioned in the Tanakh in 1 Samuel 13:19, following the Exodus, when the Israelite tribes were already in the Land of Canaan. The name "Israel" first appears in the Hebrew Bible as the name given by God to the patriarch Jacob.
