Lucifer was one of Gods angels, described as "the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty". He was a covering cherub, an angel that stood in the very presence of God, covering the ark of the testimony, in which lay the law of God. Lucifers name means "day star" or "son of the morning," which aptly describes his intended role. However, according to the Bible, Lucifer became filled with violence and sinned, and his heart was lifted up because of his beauty. His pride led to his downfall, and he was sentenced to the pits of hell, and his name was changed to Satan. Lucifers sin mainly consisted of self-deification, and he wanted to be worshipped instead of worshipping God. Lucifer is identified with the devil in Christianity and in Christian popular literature, as in Dante Alighieris Inferno, Joost van den Vondels Lucifer, and John Miltons Paradise Lost.
