The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel located on a rocky outcrop above the city of Athens, Greece, and contains the remains of several ancient buildings of great architectural and historical significance, the most famous being the Parthenon. The Acropolis was used for various purposes throughout history, including:

• Residence of the ruler: Originally, the Acropolis was the residence of the ruler, in the place where the Erechtheion is today.

• Place of worship: The Acropolis was a place of worship for the Goddess of fertility and nature, and for her companion, the God of the sea. During the classical Greek era, it was a sacred space devoted to the cult of the city’s patron goddess, Athena, as well as other local heroes and deities.

• Administrative center: During the Latin Duchy of Athens, the Acropolis functioned as the citys administrative center, with the Parthenon as its cathedral, and the Propylaea as part of the Ducal Palace.

• Fortification: The Acropolis was also used as a fortification, chosen for purposes of defense.

The Acropolis of Athens is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered a universal symbol of the classical spirit and civilization.
