The coldest temperature ever recorded on Earth is -128.6 degrees Fahrenheit (-89.2 degrees Celsius). This temperature was recorded on July 21, 1983, at the Vostok Station in Antarctica. The Vostok station is one of the most remote research stations in the world and operates on about 2.3 miles of ice. The previous record for the coldest temperature recorded was at the Vostok Foreign Branch in 1968, registering a temperature of -127 degrees Fahrenheit (-88.3 degrees Celsius). However, a group of scientists measured even colder temperatures on the East Antarctic Plateau from 2004 to 2016 using satellite data. According to the study, published in Geophysical Research Letters, scientists saw snow surface temperatures of below -130 degrees Fahrenheit (-90 degrees Celsius), the lowest being around -144 degrees Fahrenheit (-98 degrees Celsius).
