Before the amalgamation of Nigeria in 1914, the country was not known as Nigeria. Rather, it was divided into two protectorates: the Northern Nigeria Protectorate and the Southern Nigeria Protectorate. The Southern Nigeria Protectorate was formed in 1900 from the union of the Niger Coast Protectorate with territories chartered by the Royal Niger Company below Lokoja on the Niger River. The Lagos colony was later added in 1906, and the territory was officially renamed the Colony and Protectorate of Southern Nigeria. On January 1, 1914, the two protectorates were amalgamated to form the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria under a single governor-general resident in Lagos.
