The Pantheon is a building in Rome that has been used for different purposes throughout history. It was built by Marcus Agrippa as a temple dedicated to a deified king and other gods associated with him, and it was decorated with statues representing the greatest gods of Roman religion. The exact function of the Pantheon is still shrouded in mystery, and there has been speculation as to whether it was explicitly dedicated to the entirety of the Roman deities or not. The Pantheon was converted into a Christian church in the 7th century, and it has been known as the Basilica di Santa Maria ad Martyres ever since. The bronze rosettes and moldings of the ceiling and other bronze embellishments have disappeared over time, and a frieze of stucco decoration was applied to the interior directly beneath the dome in the late Renaissance. Otherwise, the building exists entirely in its original form.
