The purpose of the Albany Plan of Union was to create a unified and organized partnership among the American colonies to address common threats and needs, particularly those concerning collective defense, western expansion, and relations with Native American tribes. It aimed to establish a centralized colonial government with the power to make treaties, raise military forces, levy taxes, and coordinate policies across the colonies. This plan was proposed by Benjamin Franklin during the Albany Congress in 1754 as a means to improve colonial cooperation and reform colonial-imperial relations, especially in light of the growing threat from the French and their Native American allies. Despite being adopted by the Albany Congress, the plan was rejected by both colonial legislatures and the British government, largely because colonies were reluctant to give up individual control over taxation and governance, and Britain feared losing authority. This marked the first significant effort toward colonial unity in America.
