The 2023 Australian Indigenous Voice referendum was held on October 14, 2023, and the proposal to create a federal advisory board to parliament including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People was voted down in a majority of key states, including South Australia. The only territory to return a majority Yes vote was the ACT. The referendum also failed to receive a majority of votes across the country, falling short with a projected percentage of 55% . As a result, the proposal will not be enshrined in the constitution. The referendum was the first in almost a quarter of a century and was difficult to pass, with only eight of 44 referendums succeeding since the countrys founding in 1901. The result was seen as a major setback to the countrys reconciliation efforts.
