Verna is a character in the Netflix series "The Fall of the House of Usher," which is based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe. She is portrayed by Carla Gugino and is a mysterious figure who appears at the end of each family members life, acting as a harbinger of death. Verna is actually an anagram for "Raven," and she portrays the black raven from Poes "The Raven". She collects an item from each family member as they depart and later places the items on their gravestones. Verna is a supernatural creature with the power to shapeshift and create illusions. She occasionally appears as a raven, especially in the first episode when patriarch Roderick Usher realizes what he has done.
It is revealed in the final episode that Roderick Usher and his sister Madeline made a deal with Verna at a bar on New Years Eve before he had any children. The deal granted them wealth, power, and freedom to commit any crime, in exchange for the lives of everyone with his bloodline. When it would be time for Roderick Usher to go, the House of Usher would fall with him. Vernas consecutive murders of the Usher family are just her fulfilling the terms of the agreement.
