Ashoka, the Indian emperor of the Maurya dynasty, promoted the spread of Buddhism across ancient Asia. He was the first ruler in history who tried to take his message directly to the people. The means adopted by Ashoka to spread the message of Dhamma were:

• Dhamma Mahamattas: He appointed officials known as dhamma-mahamatras to spread and explain the message of Dhamma.

• Inscribed Rock Pillars: Ashoka got his messages inscribed on rocks and pillars in a language called Prakrit which was comprehensible to all.

• Messengers: He sent messengers to other countries like Syria, Egypt, Greece, and Sri Lanka to spread the message of Dhamma.

• Dhamma Yatras: Ashoka himself went on tours of examination called dhamma yatras.

• Ahimsa: He himself set an example before his people by strictly following Ahimsa.

Ashoka also wrote his message on caves, gibbers, and stone pillars which were constructed in numerous parts of the empire. The messages were written down in Prakrit, the speech of the ordinary individuals.
