Title IX is a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs and activities. All public and private elementary and secondary schools, school districts, colleges, and universities receiving any Federal funds must comply with Title IX. Violations of Title IX can include:

Sexual harassment and sexual violence: This includes rape, sexual assault, sexual battery, and sexual coercion. Schools are required to publish a policy that they do not discriminate on the basis of sex in their education programs and activities, and must have a Title IX coordinator to whom inquiries concerning Title IX may be referred. Schools must also adopt and publish grievance procedures for students to file complaints of sex discrimination, including complaints of sexual harassment or sexual violence.

Gender discrimination: This includes unfair treatment, attitudes, or behaviors towards an individual based on their gender, gender identity discrimination, sexism, sexist attitudes, and sex stereotyping. Discrimination can occur in admissions, grading, housing, hiring, salary, or promotions based on sex. Educational institutions and school-sponsored programs must provide both genders with equal access, or comparable alternate opportunities, to athletics, activities, classrooms, programs, and job positions.

Bullying: This includes gender-based bullying, derogatory or sexist remarks, and gender discrimination in an activity, athletics, program, office, or classroom.

Stalking: This includes stalking or obscene phone calls, texts, emails, or gestures.

Relationship violence: This includes physical and/or aggressive sexual advances.
