Patriot Day was named a holiday in the year 2001. Specifically, by a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress on December 18, 2001, September 11 was designated as Patriot Day to commemorate the lives lost in the terrorist attacks that year. The first Patriot Day was officially observed on September 11, 2002.
