You can apply for a provisional driving licence once you meet the age requirements, which are:
- For a car provisional licence, you can apply from the age of 15 years and 9 months, but you can start driving a car only from age 17.
- For a moped or motorbike provisional licence, you can apply earlier and start riding a moped at 16 after completing Compulsory Basic Training (CBT).
You can apply online or by post. Online applications are faster, and you will need to provide identity documents, pay a fee (around £62.50), and meet other requirements such as being medically fit to drive. The application requires providing personal details including addresses where you have lived in the last three years and your National Insurance number if known. Applications by post require filling out a D1 or DL1 form, attaching original identity proofs, a passport-style photograph, and the fee by cheque or postal order. The provisional licence is a green plastic photocard with a paper counterpart.
