You can usually feel your baby kick, also called "quickening," between 16 and 25 weeks of pregnancy. If this is your first pregnancy, you might not notice these movements until closer to 25 weeks or even a little later. Women who have been pregnant before may start feeling the baby move as early as 13 to 16 weeks. The first movements often feel like gentle fluttering, butterflies, or slight twitches. As pregnancy progresses into the second and third trimesters, the kicks, jabs, and rolls get stronger and more distinct. The baby typically moves more when you are resting, especially when sitting or lying down quietly. Movement patterns vary, but by the third trimester, the baby can move about 30 times per hour. Babies tend to be more active in the evening, around 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. If you do not feel any movement by 24 weeks, it is recommended to inform your healthcare provider for further checking. Feeling your baby's movement is a sign of a healthy and developing pregnancy.
