Afghanistan did not gain independence from India. Rather, Afghanistan gained its independence from British influence and control after the Third Anglo- Afghan War in 1919. The independence is commemorated on August 19 each year, known as Afghan Independence Day. This day marks the signing of the Treaty of Rawalpindi on August 8, 1919, which granted Afghanistan full sovereignty and control over its foreign affairs, ending British influence over the country. The treaty recognized Afghanistan’s status as an independent nation, distinct from British India, and ended British control of Afghan foreign policy following the defeat of Britain in the Third Anglo-Afghan War.
