Alfred the Great died on October 26, 899. He was the King of the West Saxons from 871 and King of the Anglo-Saxons from 886 until his death. The exact circumstances of his death are not clearly known, but he died in Winchester at about the age of 50. Alfred is remembered for his military achievements against Viking invasions, administrative reforms, and promotion of education and legal improvements. His legacy as a learned and merciful ruler earned him the epithet "the Great." He was buried initially in Winchester's Old Minster and later reburied in the New Minster, a grand church intended for the dynasty he founded.
