Armistice Day became Veterans Day in 1954. After World War II and the Korean War, a U.S. law was passed to broaden the holiday’s purpose from honoring primarily World War I veterans to honoring all American veterans. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the legislation officially changing the name to Veterans Day on June 1, 1954, and the name change took effect that year. The holiday has remained on November 11 ever since, returning to that date in 1978 after a brief 1968–1977 shift to the fourth Monday in October.
