Canada stopped producing pennies in 2012. The Royal Canadian Mint ceased issuing new one-cent coins in May 2012, and the government set February 4, 2013 as the date after which pennies would no longer be distributed. While the penny remains legal tender, businesses were encouraged to round cash transactions to the nearest five cents, and pennies in circulation were gradually withdrawn and melted down starting in 2013.
