Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue on August 3, 1492. He departed from Palos in southern Spain with three ships — the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María—setting out to find a western sea route to Asia. After a voyage of over two months, Columbus and his crew sighted land on October 12, 1492, in the Bahamas, which he named San Salvador.
