Muammar Gaddafi died on October 20, 2011, in Sirte, Libya. He was killed by rebel forces after being captured during the battle for Sirte, one of the last loyalist strongholds. Gaddafi had ruled Libya for over four decades before being ousted by a revolt in 2011.
