Adolf Hitler committed suicide on April 30, 1945, in his underground Führerbunker in Berlin. He died by a self-inflicted gunshot to the head as the Soviet Army closed in on Berlin during the final days of World War II in Europe. His longtime companion Eva Braun, whom he had married just one day earlier, also committed suicide alongside him by cyanide poisoning. Following their suicides, their bodies were carried out of the bunker, doused with petrol, and burned according to Hitler's instructions.
