Juneteenth became a federal holiday on June 17, 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. This made June 19 officially recognized as the day to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. It is the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was designated in 1983.
