The Channel Tunnel officially opened on May 6, 1994, in a ceremony attended by Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom and French President François Mitterrand. Regular train services began later that year, with the first passenger Eurostar service starting in November 1994. The tunnel connects Folkestone, Kent, England, with Coquelles near Calais, France, running beneath the English Channel.
