The chickenpox vaccine was first developed in the early 1970s, became commercially available in 1984, and was first licensed for use in the United States in 1995 under the brand name Varivax. A two-dose regimen was recommended starting in 2006. The vaccine has since significantly reduced chickenpox cases and related deaths in countries where it is widely used.
