The French and Indian War started in 1754. Specifically, armed conflict began in May 1754 with the Battle of Jumonville Glen, when Virginia militia led by George Washington ambushed a French patrol. Although the war was formally declared in 1756, the fighting had already begun two years earlier over disputes in the Ohio Valley region between British and French colonial interests in North America.
