The last residential school in Canada closed in 1996. Specifically, the Gordon Reserve Indian Residential School in Saskatchewan was the last to close and was demolished thereafter. Some accounts also mention that the last federally- funded residential school closed in 1997, including Kivalliq Hall in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, which became recognized later by court ruling. The closure of these schools marked the end of a system that had operated for over 150 years across most provinces and territories in Canada.
