Volleyball became an official Olympic sport in 1964 at the Tokyo Summer Games. It was first introduced as a demonstration sport in 1924, but after significant growth and the formation of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), it was added officially in 1964 for both men and women. Beach volleyball, a variation of the sport, was later added to the Olympics in 1996. The Tokyo 1964 Games marked the debut of indoor volleyball as a medal event, featuring international teams competing for Olympic medals.
