Babies typically start losing their baby hair around 2 to 3 months of age, with hair loss peaking around 3 to 4 months. This hair loss is a normal process called telogen effluvium, related to hormonal changes after birth. The baby hair then gradually grows back, often with different color and texture, by the time the baby is about one year old. Hair loss can also be influenced by friction from lying on the back, which commonly causes hair thinning on the back of the head and resolves by around 6 to 12 months once the baby begins sitting up or rolling over. Overall, newborn hair loss in the first 6 months is very common and typically not a cause for concern.
