Southwest Airlines started charging for checked bags on May 28, 2025. From that date, the first checked bag costs $35 and the second checked bag costs $45 for flights booked on or after May 28. However, customers who purchased tickets before this date still enjoy two free checked bags. Some exceptions also apply: A-List tier members in the Rapid Rewards program, holders of Southwest branded credit cards, and passengers flying on business fares are exempt from these fees. This change marks the end of Southwest's longstanding policy of allowing two free checked bags, which had been a key part of its marketing for about 60 years.
