The Ballon d'Or award for the year 2020 was canceled due to the exceptional circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. France Football, the organizers, decided not to present the award for the first time since its inception in 1956, as they did not consider the season to be an ordinary football year to fairly judge the award.

For the upcoming years, the 2025 Ballon d'Or ceremony is scheduled to take place on Monday, September 22, 2025, at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. The nominees for the 2025 awards were announced at the beginning of August 2025.
