National Dance Day is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of September. In 2025, National Dance Day falls on September 20th. This day is dedicated to encouraging Americans of all ages to embrace dance as a form of artistic expression and physical fitness. It was created in 2010 by Nigel Lythgoe, co- creator of "So You Think You Can Dance," and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, to promote dance education and a healthy lifestyle through movement. The date was originally in July but moved to September to align with the academic year and partnerships with organizations like the American Heart Association.
Additionally, there is an official routine choreographed each year to celebrate the day, and many people participate by dancing, attending events, or posting dance videos with hashtags such as #NationalDanceDay2025.
There are also other dance-related observances, such as International Dance Day on April 29, but National Dance Day specifically refers to the third Saturday in September.
