The social media ban for Australians under the age of 16 will take effect on December 10, 2025. From that date, age-restricted social media platforms will be legally required to take reasonable steps to prevent people under 16 from creating or maintaining accounts. Parents will not be able to give consent for their children to bypass this age restriction. The ban targets major platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, X (formerly Twitter), Reddit, and YouTube, among others. Social media companies face fines up to $50 million if they fail to comply with these measures, but users and families will not be penalized for underage access. This law aims to protect young Australians from the mental health risks associated with social media use.
