Canada was officially founded as the Dominion of Canada on July 1, 1867. This was when the British North America Act united the colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada (which was split into Ontario and Quebec) into a new self-governing country. This day, July 1, is now celebrated as Canada Day to mark the birth of the nation known today as Canada.
