Guy Fawkes was arrested on the night of November 4–5, 1605, while guarding 36 barrels of gunpowder beneath the Houses of Parliament. This led to his torture and confession, and his subsequent execution on January 31, 1606. The capture effectively ended the Gunpowder Plot and gave rise to Guy Fawkes Night, commemorated in Britain on November 5 each year.
