Hispanic Heritage was first celebrated as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968. It was proclaimed by President Lyndon B. Johnson through Presidential Proclamation 3869. Later, in 1988, the week-long celebration was expanded to National Hispanic Heritage Month by legislation signed into law by President Ronald Reagan. The month is observed annually from September 15 to October 15 to honor the contributions and influence of Hispanic culture in the United States.
