It became a tropical storm named Helene on September 24, 2024, and intensified into a hurricane early on September 25, 2024. Helene rapidly strengthened and reached Category 4 intensity on the evening of September 26, 2024. It made landfall near Perry in the Big Bend region of Florida late on September 26, 2024, as a powerful Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph. It weakened as it moved inland and dissipated by September 29, 2024.
There have been instances of Hurricane Helene in previous years too, including 1958, 1988, 2006, and 2018, but the most recent and significant Hurricane Helene was the one in 2024.
