Iodine was discovered in 1811 by the French chemist Bernard Courtois. He discovered it accidentally while extracting sodium and potassium compounds from seaweed ash by adding sulfuric acid, which produced a violet vapor that crystallized into iodine. The name "iodine" was suggested later by Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac in 1813, inspired by the violet color of the iodine vapor.
