The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was officially established on August 15, 1969. It was founded by Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, who is regarded as the father of the Indian space program

. Before ISRO's formation, space research in India began with the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR), set up in 1962 by the Government of India on the recommendation of Vikram Sarabhai and under the guidance of then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru

. ISRO replaced INCOSPAR and expanded its mandate to develop and apply space technology for national development

. ISRO's headquarters is located in Bengaluru, Karnataka
