New York City traces its European-settlement origins to the Dutch, with the trading post at Fort Amsterdam on Manhattan Island established in 1624. It was named New Amsterdam in 1626 and chartered as a city in 1653. The settlement came under English control in 1664 and was renamed New York, with a final retention of the name after 1674. The modern City of New York, formed by consolidation, dates from 1898.
